This Month in Internet (July 2017)

So the Photobucket crisis is behind me now. I still haven't updated a lot of my old posts, but I did update my previous TMI post. I went into the HTML, took out the code for the broken Photobucket links, and then uploaded the logo to that post. Then I copied the resulting code from that, and pasted it into this post. So if you see a logo above, then you'll know it worked, and that's probably what I'll do from now on.

On to the main article! These are my favorite videos from all around the internet from the month of July! Enjoy!

So let's start out this post with some music from my current favorite cartoon, Steven Universe. I have two videos here, the first is the creator of the show, Rebecca Sugar, singing one of the songs she wrote for it.

And the second is a mashup of the music done in 8-bit style by an artist I'd never heard of until this video came up in my recommendations, Joe Jeremiah. I took one listen and subscribed immediately.

Steven Universe has some amazing music, I've been saying for quite some time that I want to do a post of just Steven Universe covers, and I still plan to. Maybe I'll do that this month...

Caleb Hyles is back with a new cover, (with Jonathan Young and Adrisaurus) and while I have never played the game that the song is from, I really liked this song.

A few years ago, when Vine was still a thing, I came across an account by someone called Katie Ryan, the account had hardly anything by her, it was mostly just short clips of her daughter Ava  being hilarious. Vine is now gone, but Ava is not. She has only gotten funnier, and now that she's old enough she's writing her own characters, and she is just absolutely hilarious. If I hadn't been following her for years, I would not believe that someone this young could be so naturally funny without being told what to say.

If you want to see more of her, they compiled all of her old vines, so if you have a half an hour, you can just watch this video HERE. I highly recommend it if you need something to make you laugh. :) Also, just in case you need proof of her natural hilariousness, here's an interview she did with people magazine a few days ago.

Side note: "It's frickin' bats" has been stuck in my head for like three weeks, and it's now one of my all time favorite quotes. :p

Next up, Lindsey Stirling did a video with Kurt Hugo Schneider! I had literally just been thinking to myself just a couple days before they released this, 'I wonder why Lindsey and KHS haven't teamed up to do anything recently, they really should!' And like two days later, Boom! This came out! I think I'm like psychic or something. :p

And of course, KHS is a very prolific artist, so the video with Lindsey was far from the only one this month, he also did this video with someone I'd never heard of before, Lara Somogyi, but I loved her! She plays the harp! Like, no one does that anymore!

Now, before you go on to the next video, I must warn you, it is very weird. If you remember the few other videos I've posted with Poppy, you know that what is coming isn't normal, but I love things that aren't normal, so I loved this. :p And this song is just so weirdly catchy, it just gets stuck in your head. I'm just giving you fair warning in case you decide to proceed. :p

Mike Tompkins is back with another amazing cover!

And Pogo is back with another amazing original song! This doesn't have a video to go with it, but I LOVED the song so much, I just had to include it. :p

And finally, Simply Three released an EAR-MELTINGLY AWESOME cover of Eurythmics Sweet Dreams!

Chained to the Rhythm (On Repeat)

I was putting together one of my video posts, and I realized that I had saved a LOT of videos covering Katy Perry's new song Chained to the Rhythm. Before when I've had a bunch of the same song, I just put them into one of my Internet Awesome posts, but I really didn't feel like doing that again. I like those posts to be really eclectic, with a wide variety of videos, so I decided to start a new series!

As you may have gathered from the title, the series is called On Repeat, and it will be a place where I can post multiple versions of the same song all in one place, without it having to fill up another kind of post. And since this in going to be a series, I had to create another logo, so here it is!

We'll start the post with the video where I first heard the original song, the lyric video. The lyric video is odd in that the on-screen action has literally nothing to do with the content of the lyrics, it's literally just a person making tiny dinners for a hamster. It's so random, but I loved it. :p

I just went to rewatch the official music video, and I realized that the lyric video actually does tie into the song by way of the fact that the mascot for the dystopian theme park is a hamster, and they are eventually running on futuristic hamster wheels. So I guess that solves the mystery of why the hamster was in the lyric video. :p

(On a completely unrelated note, I'm not the biggest fan of cotton candy, but I really want one of those giant mushroom cloud/atomic bomb fallout cotton candy clouds!) :p

For the first of our covers we'll go to Evynne Hollens. This was actually just released today, but I knew it was coming, so I delayed putting out this post until she released it. I couldn't do a post like this without a Hollens video if I knew one was coming now could I? :)

Next we have an awesome string quartet cover by Simply Three. They always have the best string covers of popular music!

Next up is Mike Tompkins. He always puts such a unique spin on everything he covers. A cappella is enough of a twist, but he always seems to go one step further.

Lastly we have a cover by Kurt Hugo Schneider, featuring Rebecca Black! She has definitely come a long ways since her "Friday" days!

And that's it! I don't expect this to be a regularly occurring type of post, but if a song comes out that a lot of people decide to cover, I might eventually have to do another post. :)

Christmas is Awesome!

I was going to title this post with my standard acronym, but then it would be something that stands for something else, and I didn't want them coming after me for stealing their acronym, so I didn't. :p

Everybody on YouTube has been making a ton of awesome Christmas content, and while I can't share it all, I did want to pick out a few of my favorites. And by a few, I mean a lot. Feel free to use this as your Christmas afternoon entertainment. :p

First up we'll kick this off with something from last year. I know I said I was doing stuff from this year, but I didn't do one of these last year, and Pentatonix did a ton of awesome videos last year. Since I'm focusing on this year, I'll only pick out one from last year, and I'm picking out the best one, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Peter Hollens finally made a video for one of his most requested Christmas songs.

Simply Three, the string quartet, made a video for Christmas as well, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.

Next up is a hilarious sketch from Studio C. It just wouldn't be Christmas without some dark humor, right? :p

Lindsey Stirling made a video for the song Hallelujah, by going undercover as a street performer. Yes, this is not "Technically" a Christmas song, but she made it one. :)

Even Karmin got into the Christmas Spirit by taking a song I have never liked, for it's creepy undertones, and reworking it. Turning it from a song that sounds like an uncomfortable coercion situation, and into one about an internal conflict.

One of my biggest pet peeves this time of year, are people who complain about the "War on Christmas" and vehemently decry the use of the greeting "Happy Holidays." Blimey Cow made an absolutely brilliant spoof of these kinds of people, framing it in the language of the so-called "Social Justice Warriors." I was dying of laughter through the whole thing. If you've ever had the misfortune of heading down a dark tumblr path, then you know the other group, the SJWs, that they're talking about. It's a brilliant satire of both ends of the ideological spectrum.

Earlier this year I discovered that BYU has an accapella group, and they do some amazing work. (Of course they do, they're Mormons. Mormons apparently breath music! :p)

Nataly Dawn of Pomplamoose fame, recently covered Edelweiss, which is apparently a Christmas song now. :p Either way she's amazing. :)

And since I love both dark humor and puppets, the channel Glove and Boots has been doing both in a series of Santa confessional videos. This one is the funniest one. I about died laughing at the twist ending.

Since we started with PTX, let's end with them too. They've been hard at it this year again, with two new videos, Joy to the World, and The First Noel.
