Last Month Online (October 2018)

Yeah, this is late. I've got a lot going on. So much great music this month! Let's kick this off with Peter Hollens, doing a collab that I am kind of shocked hasn't happened before now, with Chester See!

And we'll follow that up with a video from Peter's wife! Evynne is singing one of my favorite Celtic/folk songs, and it is amazing!

I saw this next video on Reddit, and I knew I had to include it here. This is an utterly genius bit of editing work, they took Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" and set it to Michael Jackson's Thriller video, which features zombies. It was such a brilliant joke I about died laughing at work. ðŸ¤£

Next we have a video from Pentatonix's upcoming Christmas album, which I considered saving for my eventual holiday post at the end of the year, but as you will see, the song is from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the video leans a little more toward Nightmare than Christmas. 😜

And speaking of The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Hound + The Fox covered a song from that movie this month as well!

Not every Halloween-themed video this month was based on this Disney classic though, we also got another song from Pomplamoose and Tessa Violet, mashing up The Monster Mash, with several other thematically appropriate songs. And also some really random choices, like the theme from The Fresh Prince of Bell-Aire? But somehow it all works SO well!

It has been awhile since I've shared a World Order video, but they just released a new video, and it was everything I expect from them. I just love watching them... Dance? Move? Slowly move their bodies completely in sync with each other and the music. 😜

Next we have another amazing video from Jonna Jinton, which is different that any of her videos before! I love this! It's such a great idea for a video!

Thanks to the release of a Queen biopic last month, another trending musical genre beyond the usual October/Halloween, was covers of Queen songs. (Does that count as a genre?) I picked out what I thought were the two most creative examples of the trend, this one from 10 Second Songs:

And this massive musical mashup from Peter Hollens. We'll end with this one, which was probably my favorite song all month. I have replayed it SO many times! It's just so good!

ChristmasTube

There have been a whole bunch of Christmas related videos on YouTube lately. I decided to put all my favorites into one blog post for your viewing pleasure. :)

On my dead “Entertainment blog” I posted about a series of videos called “Kid History”. That was one of the posts I actually saved, and moved over to this blog because their videos were so funny. You can find that post HERE. They recently released a Christmas video, and of course it had me laughing all the way. (Sorry for the lame “Jingle Bells” reference. It won’t happen again.) :p

One of my very favorite YouTube Channels is the Piano Guys, who don’t JUST do piano music, there’s a lot of cello there too. They have also gotten into the Christmas spirit and have started releasing their very first Christmas videos.

Okay, confession time, really, this post was just an excuse to blog about one of my favorite YouTube stars, Lindsey Stirling again. :) She just released another Christmas video, and I just had to share it. If you missed her beautiful version of Silent Night, check out my post HERE, and watch it, plus her amazing “Legend of Zelda” video.

This time her video is a song she apparently wrote herself, and it has a Celtic Flair to the music! I love Celtic music, so I couldn’t NOT share this. I generally dislike a lot of “Santa stuff”, but even though this is a kind of a Santa themed video, (Without Santa) I still love it. :) I also love that she is reusing her elf ears from the Legend of Zelda video. :)

The guy who has been filming her most recent videos has his own YouTube Channel as well. In fact it was because of his channel that I discovered Lindsey, after he filmed her first major music video. He is a film maker named Devin Graham, I actually discovered him through the Piano Guys as he has worked for them before. His video are always very cool. Until this one, which isn’t so much “Cool” as it is “Cavity Inducingly adorable.” (As a side note, this video has gone seriously viral in the last week, over a million and a half views! He may end up getting quite famous because of this one!)

Awe! Don’t you all just want a pile of puppies now?! :D

Merry Christmas everyone!

Music, As of Late

Yesterday my cousin blogged about some songs that she had recently been listening to, and wanted responses from people sharing songs that they have recently been listening to. I decided I’d respond through a blog post of my own.

My first one is one that she had in her blog, but I have been pretty obsessed with it lately as well. I first heard this song when a friend posted it to facebook a couple weeks ago. I went and bought the single on iTunes, and it is already at #4 on my top 25 most played on my iPod. I suspect it’ll be #1 in about a week.

Brook Fraser’s “Something in the Water”

I am very tempted to post every single song by Owl City, because I always listen to at least one of his songs every time I use my iPod. However, this post would be way too long if I did that, so I’ll stick to just a few that have official Music videos.

I’ll start off with Alligator Sky, from the upcoming Album “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” This song surprised me because it contains a rap segment. Normally I absolutely DETEST rap, but I did not hate this one! Unlike most rap, angry and rife with swear words, this song sounds cheerful and optimistic. I still would not call it one of my favorite songs, and I look forward to getting the album which contains a second rap-less version, but it shows that in the right hands, rap can be done a lot better than most rap “artists” of today do.

The next song I have had had playing off and on for the last couple of years ever since it was featured on the show Pushing Daisies. (Oh how I miss that show!) There is no official music video so I had to make do with a fan-made one.

They Might be Giants’ “Birdhouse in Your Soul” covered by Kristen Chenoweth and Ellen Green.

I absolutely love the movie, “How to Train Your Dragon,” and ever since I watched it I have had this song playing frequently in my iPod.

Jonsi’s “Sticks and Stones”.

Straight No Chaser is one of the best acappella groups I have ever heard, and while they are most famous for their Christmas albums, they do sing other songs as well. I really love their cover of the song “Africa.” No official music video exists, so I had to get an upload from some random YouTube user. I haven’t actually been playing this particular song myself lately, but I keep hearing the original version over the speakers at work, and every time I hear it I wish they’d be playing this version. It is FAR superior.

Next is another Owl City song, “To the Sky” from Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. I love this movie and I love the fact that they got Owl City to do the song for a movie about Owls. :)

This next song is so random, and so funny. It is definitely not my favorite song, but I really like it and it currently holds the top spot as the most played song on my iPod, due to the fact that I play it at least once every time I go to the Wellness Center to exercise.

Space Unicorn by Parry Gripp

I was introduced to the next song by another one of my cousins. And I now love it. The song is “I’ll Tell Me Ma.” It’s an Irish folk song, so it has been sung by many many different groups. This version is done by The Young Dubliners, but there are lots of great versions out there. Just search YouTube and you’ll be busy for the rest of the day. Again, there’s no music video for this.

And lastly, the song that made me a fan of Owl City, thanks to a free download from iTunes, “Fireflies.” The best word I have to describe this song is the same word I have to describe pretty much any song by Adam Young. Happy. :) That’s the reason I love Owl City so much. It always lifts my spirits.
