Getting Ready for the Fair

This week is the annual Shelby County Fair. I haven’t entered anything for quite a few years. I used to always try to enter a drawing, or some cookies when I was younger, but I kind of gave up when I got older. I never thought my stuff was good enough to compete with the other entrants. Well, this year I decided I didn’t care. I want to start entering stuff in the fair again. I’ve done a lot in art class, and I have taken so many pictures, I have plenty of things I could enter.

The main thing I wanted to focus on this year was my photography, but going through my pictures and trying to choose just one for every category is SO hard! ARGH! I want to enter them all! I just finished deciding on my last photo to enter, and somehow it’s almost 1:30 in the morning! I had a ton of photos to Go through. The worst thing was that except for the “Creative” division, there is no digital manipulation allowed whatsoever! I HATE that rule! That means no color tweaking and no correcting under or over exposed images. I had a PERFECT picture for the “Life In Iowa” category, but it was so washed out and horrible looking before I fixed it on the computer. After I was done with it, it looked great, but it wouldn’t be eligible for entry. I’ll share it here with all of you anyway.

Here is the original photo.

It’s my dad, in his cowboy hat, in a cornfield. :) Very Iowa.

And here is what it looks like now.

Isn’t it great? I want to enter it so bad, but the stupid rules forbid it!

Oh well, I have 10 other pictures to enter. I’ll share them tomorrow though. I really need to get to bed…

  1. So this is actually matthew... love this photo... wish I could see all your stuff on display at the fair. Can people really tell whether a photo has been tweaked or not? Or is it just kind of an honesty policy?

  2. I don't know if they can tell or not. I'm thinking not, but I still would rather not break the rules, no matter how ridiculous they seem.

I'll post pictures of my stuff on display too. I know it won't be the same, but unless they invent a Latvia to Iowa teleporter, I don't think you'll be able to. :)

  3. That's a great photo, cuz'n! I love the way you captured your dad's head and cowboy hat peeking out of the sky-high cornstalks. ;D It's artistic, and at the same time tickles my funny bone. :)

  4. Thanks. I have other pictures of him in that field that I took that night too. I posted them on facebook, but they might find their way to my photo blog too. I haven't decided yet.
